my 75 gal tank went through a mini cycle is it safe now?
i bought a couple new fish (big fish) for my 75 gal tank which now has a 9 inch oscar (already had him) a 5 inch jack dempsey (just got him) and a 4 inch pleco.
yesterday i when i tested the water i noticed a slght ammonia spike which i kinda expected because i basically doubled the load and recently changed the media in the filter not all of it of course just some.
ammonia was in between .25 and .50 i use the api master test kit..
nitrites were 0 ph was 7.6 and nitrates were around 10ppm maybe a little below
i had some safe start laying around from previous cycles months back that i used for another tank.
i put all that in there added some prime and today ammonia is about .25 ph is 7.6 nitrites still 0 and nitrates 10…is it just taking awhile for things to adjust?
i will be doing a small water change today i wanted to wait for the safe start to settle yesterday before doing anything, just making sure things sound ok.
When you add more fish, you have more ammonia going into the system.
The cycle bacteria and fish are in balance in the tank, when you add more fish, then you need to let the bacteria catch up, and that may take a few days.
Under 0.5 is not really dangerous, and as long as it goes down after a couple of days thats fine.
Having better filters means they recover faster as you have more media space for the bacteria to multiply. But you dont need to add anything, just monitor the water conditions and do an extra water change if needed.
