how to get engine and transmision to mesh?
I have a 1998 subaru impreza that I had to change the main seal on. Have done this for other cars and thought it would be easy. Got the engine out the the seal changed but can not get the engine and the transmision to mesh back togather any tips would help.
I know this is a 1 piece rear main, but why would you pull the engine to replace the rear main, would it not have been easier to drop the trans?
I am guessing this is a manual trans, because unless you installed the flexplate wrong, I can’t imagine an auto trans being too hard to align. UNLESS the torque converter is out of place, or turned wrong. Make sure the torque converter didn’t slip forward, make sure it is fully back into the trans and pump.
For a manual trans:
Make sure the splines are clean on the input shaft and the clutch disc. apply a SMALL amount of a light grease to the shaft to help it slide into the clutch. have the trans in gear so you can use the driveshaft to turn the splined input shft as you ease the engine in to help align the splines. if there is room use a couple of guide bolts threaded into the block to help guide the trans, usually two bolts of the smae thread, but 3-4 inches longer with the heads cut off that you can thread into the block and be able to unscrew after the trans is in place.
The angle could be off just a bit too, try jacking the trans up and down to match the angle of the bellhousing to the engine.
Patience..plenty of it. I know what you are going through. I have had some that were a real bear, spent 45 minutes cussing at them, walk away, come back 10 minutes later and they practically fall into place.
Good luck..now you know why mechanics charge what they do..if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
