During strenuous exercise the kreb’s cycle and the electron transport chain can’t keep up with the need for ATP. So the body uses the ATP from glycolysis and fermentation. The problem is that NAD+ needs to be regenerated from NADH for glycolysis to continue. The purpose of fermentation (converting pyruvate to lactate) is to regenerate the NAD+, so if the muscle cells could not do this glycolysis would stop.
